Every move is different. Use this guide as a starting point and adapt it to your property, access, dates and belongings.

Start with low-emotion areas

Begin with utility cupboards, duplicate kitchen items and unused storage before tackling sentimental belongings.

Create four clear routes

Separate keep, donate or reuse, recycle and dispose. Avoid a single uncertain pile that gets packed at the last minute.

Check specialist waste

Paint, chemicals, batteries, fridges and electronics may require particular services. Do not mix them with general clearance.

Update the moving inventory

Once items leave, give the mover the revised list so vehicle space and cost reflect what is actually moving.

Check responsible disposal

If a private company takes household waste in England, check its waste carrier registration. Ask where restricted goods will go and keep any agreed paperwork.

Do not mix up collections

Clearly separate belongings for the new home from donations and disposal. A final walk-through and marked inventory reduce the risk of an item being cleared by mistake.
